Documentary “Love Noise” Explores China’s Emerging Rock Music Scene
When everyone was celebrating the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing last August, two Beijing-based rock bands P.K. 14 and Queen Sea Big Shark were put on a bus for a two-week-long concert tour through five major musically diverse cities in China: Nanjing, Hangzhou, Changsha, Wuhan and Xi’an. A documentary was also taped to chronicle and pay tribute to this hot-blooded rock odyssey.
Initiated and sponsored by originality-advocator Converse, the two bands lived on the bumpy bus for over 5,768 kilometers and the eight members turned the bus from brand new to a piece of rock-art wrapped with a cluster of graffiti with the help of local rock singers from the cities visited.
On the media screening of “Love Noise” yesterday, I was intrigued by the way director Hammer Liu presents the five concerts. Using non-professional shooting equipments, varied visual styles and multi camera techniques including high contrast, colorful, infrared, saturated and black and white grain shots for texture and tone, the documentary is able to capture the befuddled expression of devoted rock fans, sentimental behind-the-scenes stories and penetrate the day-to-day arrangement of these two bands. It’s a piece that any underground music fans and supporters should not miss out.
