This excellent upmarket eatery attracts a power lunch crowd during the day and couples smooching over tapas in the evenings. The stylishly-attired waitstaff are renowned for their top-notch service, while the comfortable seating and relaxing ambiance make Mare a prime place for a romantic night on the town.

Really bad pseudo-spanish food Last weekend i went to Mare because it was meant to be the "best" spanish restaurant in town. I'm spanish and i'm really disappointed with the food they serve at this pseudo-spanish restaurant. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to people willing to try spanish food because it has nothing to do with it. The food they serve has really poor quality and the way they cook it is even worse. They only have 3 spanish wines in the wine list! Moreover, they don't know how to prepare spanish desserts like "arroz con leche" or "crema catalana"! Furthermore, how come they call Spanish omelette to what they serve...Anyway, i must admit that the place is very nice but also that the food quality is incredibly poor. (I thought that my maid back in Spain cooked really bad, but compared to the best restaurant in Beijing she's a great Chef!!).

The food is delicious I have been to Mare twice -- once for a Friday night dinner, and a few weeks later on Saturday for lunch. On Friday night the restaurant was very busy but we were served quickly and the food was delicious. I can recommend the baby squid, the pork tenderloin with blue cheese and the red peppers stuffed with salt cod and served with salad. It may not be authentic Spanish food, but this is Beijing and I will trade authenticity for high quality, creatively prepared and decently priced dishes. Mare does all of this well. The beer was cold and the wine list OK. The service attentive and pleasant. Really, if one is offended by fusion cooking you need to return to the 20th century. This is a charming restaurant with low lighting, nice decor, and none of the usual clutter of Chinese restaurants. Senor Wilder (see above) needs to loosen up a bit or his time here in China is going to be very difficult.

Nice place but poor food quality @Victoria: Mare is a prefect misrepresentation of a Spanish a restaurant and gives people a wrong impression about what Spanish dishes are like. If you like fusion restaurants there are tons of them in Beijing so i agree with you that they should rename their restaurant as a fusion restaurant and not a Spanish restaurant. As you can read on their ad, they were given the Silver Spoon Award for 'Most Romantic' in City Weekend's 2006 Restaurant Survey, but nothing is said about the quality of the food they serve. None of the dishes you've mentioned above are typically Spanish so next time you write a comment please read a little bit about Spanish gastronomy. Btw, i'm doing great thanks! Just trying to help other Spaniards to avoid dining at the wrong places or at least to let them know what they will find. Señorita Victoria, don´t be so naive please...

A Taste of Spain for the Romantic Having spent a few very enjoyable years in Spain I looked foreward to finding out what Spanish restaraunts can offer in Beijing. When a friend recommended Mare for a romantic evening I needed little urging to give it a try.
We certainly were not disappointed, the service and atmosphere complement the food and for those of us looking for a romantic venue it seems hard to beat. The food more than lived up to the atmosphere. The Chipirones rebozados were tender and delicately flavoured, as were the Chuletitas de cordero. We shared a Tournedo a la plancha (with truffles) and we can only say that it was superb. My wife insists that a meal is not a meal without a salad - the Ensalada de la heurta met her, high, standards. We finished with the Bomba de chocolate caliente - the only word to describe it is incredible - my wife was in chocolate heaven.
For a special day - wedding aniversary - we splurged out on a bottle of Reserva Bodegas Nekeas - its full bodied flavour complemented the Tournedo without overpowering the truffle sauce. However with an eye to more budget concious meals in the future I noted that Mare has a well balanced list of wines by the glass and half bottle.
We will return!

NICE! Dessert is a must must try.

Nice Tapas selection, particularly the squid, 'french' mushrooms and baby lamb chops. It is best to go with a group so you can have a wide selection. Service is pleasant, efficient and friendly, I guess the fact that you need to book early says it all.

I simply cannot say enough wonderful things about Mare - it's definitely one of the best Western restaurants in Beijing! The decor is sleek and comfortable; the wait staff is extremely knowledgeable (speaks great English!) and professional. And the food is spectacular - my boyfriend and I have been back on several occassions and we've loved everything we've tried on the menu! His favorite is the tournedos (filet mignon steak) which is cooked to perfection extremely tender and full of flavorful juices. I love the buttery monkfish...it's like melt-in-you-mouth perfection. I also love the blue cheese pork loin and the spicy red pepper tuna...and the lamb is great too (and I don't even usually like lamb!)
For first timers: i recommend getting the tapas platter to try a variety of dishes. Also, the lunch specials are only 68rmb for 2 courses or 88rmb for 3 - they give great portions and you can sample some of their best items so it's a great deal!

I would give this place 10 stars if possible!

This is a fantastic restaurant that we've recently fallen in love with.
The Andalucian Calamari is fantastic, as is the mixed grill skeawers and bacon wrapped prawn skeawers.
Highly recommended and the service is excellent too!

I am a massive fan of Mediterranean cuisine, in particular Spanish anything. Mare was really a treat. Great service, ambiance was superb, and while prices are a little high, you definitely are getting great quality.
A lot of work and effort went into this place, and it definitely shows. Just seeing by how many people have reviewed this restaurant before me, it seems the word is out that this is one of the best, highly-consistent crowd pleasers around town.

best restaurant in Beijing.

I don't agree with the comments above: food in Mare is definitely good, but nothing amazing.
Interior design is romantic, service is great, but I'm just not that impressed with the food, even though I have never been disappointed. In my opinion, it's nevertheless the best Spanish restaurant in Beijing.

As with the e-Tower branch, exceptional service, great atmosphere and excellent food.
Really liked the grilled giant prawns and the baby squid with lemon. Thought the suckling pig was lovely but the skin could have been crispier. The meat did just melt though.

Better lunch special than that Brazilian place.

Definitively my favorite place for a dinner with friends. I can not count how many times we went there over the past three years and never disappointing. The atmosphere is very friendly but, above all, it is the food that you will enjoy there: the list of tapas is long and tasty (my advice: the lamb chop, the pork with cheese, the calarami, the foie gras, the shrimp and the risotto!). Dont miss the main course also: I must confess I always jump on the Cod fish prepared with spices and beans: the best cod fish i have ever tried! The wine list is well furnished too but it is a pity they changed their Malbec, the previous one was so great! As a conclusion: go there, you wont regret it!

excellent food and ambience which make you feel pleasant and relaxing ,an extensive sellection of more than 30 kinds of tapas makes me get more hungry,by the recommendation of an attentive waitress, i ordered foie gras with apple and wild mushroom risotto, the foie gras is fresh and exquisite with the complemented flavor of marinated apple.how can i describe the feeling when tasting the risotto, i think going to have a try is the best way!

Excellent, and real spanish We are a spanish couple, and going to MAre became a tradition since the first day :) The taste is real spanish, and quality is very good.
